Tide Completes Fall with Quality Showing at UNLV Fall Classic

LAS VEGAS – Sammy Struyf, Dan Buikema and Andrew Felsenthal represented the Alabama men’s tennis team this weekend at the UNLV Fall Classic and combined to win five matches over the weekend in the Crimson Tide’s final event of the fall.
Felsenthal walked away with a pair of singles victories and upped his fall record to 9-8. He rebounded from an early-round loss on Friday to record victories in his final two matches on the weekend. Felsenthal defeated SEC foe Johnny Thornton of Tennessee in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 and defeated UNLV’s Martin Redelinghuys 7-6, 5-7, 7-6. Felsenthal ends the fall as the Tide’s leader in victories.
Alabama assistant coach Lee Nickell accompanied the Tide trio at the event and said he’s pleased with how the group rebounded after a rough first day to record several hard-fought victories in the final two days of competition.
“I think we started a little slow,” Nickell said, “but I’m pleased with how we came back on Saturday and Sunday and earned several tough wins. Andrew won a three-set match in a tiebreaker and Sammy and Dan came through with a big win in doubles.”
Struyf and Buikema defeated Fresno State’s Jakub Cech and Sam Tadevosian 8-6 in Flight A doubles on Saturday. Felsenthal teamed up with Oklahoma’s Tommy Garrison in doubles to defeat the same Fresno State team.
Buikema, a freshman from Battle Creek, Michigan, picked up his fourth career singles victory on Sunday. Buikema defeated Tadevosian in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Alabama’s fall schedule is now complete and the Tide will take to the courts again at home on January 29 to open its dual-match season against Furman and Troy.
