Four Alabama soccer players, Libby Probst, Kara Gudmens, Colleen Posey and Kailey Corken, have all garnered post-season honors from the Southeastern Conference as announced Wednesday at the SEC Soccer Banquet in Orange Beach, Ala.
Probst, a senior forward from Salt Lake City, Utah, has been named SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She led the conference in goals (15) and points (37) this season while maintaining a 3.67 GPA in Chemical Engineering. On September 16 Probst became Alabama’s all-time leader in points, goals and assists when she scored five goals and five assists against Nicholls State. Her 15 points in that game was just one point off the all-time NCAA record for most points in a single game.
“When you talk about class, integrity and a commitment to excellence both on and off the field, you sum up what Libby is all about,” Alabama head coach Don Staley said. “But with as much as she has achieved on the field, she will more than surpass that in the game of life.”
Probst is the first Alabama soccer player to earn the SEC’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor and earlier this season she became the first Tide player to be named Soccer America National Player of the Week.
For the second straight season, Alabama has landed a pair of players on the All-Freshman Team. This year it’s Kara Gudmens and Colleen Posey representing the Tide. Gudmens played in all 18 games for the Tide this season, earning 13 starts. She posted a 1.45 goals-against-average in 1,116 minutes of action and her 66 saves ranked fifth in the SEC. Posey saw playing time in all 18 of Alabama’s games and started the final seven at defender. She logged 891 minutes and became one of the conference’s top defenders after being forced into a starting role due to several injuries.
“Kara and Colleen are two players who are very deserving of the recognition they’ve earned from the coaches around the SEC,” Staley said. “I know their success this season will only encourage them to work towards loftier goals.”
Freshman Kailey Corken has become the fourth Alabama player to be named to the SEC’s Good Works Team. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Corken has volunteered her time at Arcadia Elementary school in Alberta City, Ala. The freshman midfielder spent this past summer volunteering her time at the Bethany House, a women's shelter in Cincinnati. She is also a member of the Key Club and was selected to be apart of the National Honor Society.
Corken saw limited action this season after sustaining an injury prior to the beginning of the season. However, she managed to recover and play in 11 games. On Oct. 14 she scored her first collegiate goal in a 3-1 win over LSU.
“There’s no question that her progression on the field since coming back from an injury is plenty reason to smile,” Staley said. “But its honors such as these that show what a well-rounded individual Kailey is.”
