TUSCALOOSA – First-year Alabama women’s golf coach Mic Potter announced the signing of his first official recruit to the Capstone, as New York prep Kelley VanDenburg has signed a letter of intent to join the Tide for the 2006-07 season.
“We are very excited to have Kelley join our program” Potter said. “She is passionate about golf, a hard worker and an excellent student. She is exactly the type of kid we are looking to have in our program right now.”
VanDenburg, a native of Brockport, N.Y., starred for Brockport High School in her prep career. VanDenburg won the NYSPHSAA State Tournament in Syracuse this summer and was a semi-finalist in the NYSGA Junior Girls Amateur the past two years. She captured consecutive New York Section V championships for large schools in the state in addition to a runner-up finish at the Monroe County Championships last fall.
The 5-6 senior also owns an extensive national tournament career, having competed in several prestigious tournaments at the amateur level. VanDenburg earned a runner-up finish at the PGA Junior Series last August, and has three more top-10 finishes to her credit in the last two years to her credit.
The Crimson Tide women’s golf team will return to action for the spring portion of the 2005-06 season on Feb. 19, 2006. Alabama will compete in the Papa John’s Collegiate Invitational in Miami to kick-off the spring campaign.
