University of Alabama cross country standout Augustus Maiyo has been named the SEC Cross Country Freshman of the Year as announced by the league office this morning.
Maiyo has led the resurgence of Alabama Cross Country all season, finishing each race as the top finisher for the Tide. He’s finished in the Top 10 of every meet this season. He claimed the championship at the Crimson Classic, posted a runner-up finish at the SEC Championships and finished fourth at the NCAA South Region Championships.
“It’s great news, he’s very deserving having led the team all season as the top individual,” said Coach Joe Walker. “I’m excited for him that all his hard work in the fall is paying off. It seems that every year it comes down to Arkansas, us or Florida and it feels good to get back in that spot.”
Maiyo earned All-SEC and All-Region honors this season. He was also named the SEC’s Athlete of the Week on September 13.
He is the second Tide runner to earn SEC Freshman of the Year honors under Coach Walker’s tutelage. Current senior Peter Etoot earned the Freshman of the Year moniker in 2002.
Maiyo and the Tide will compete at the NCAA Championships on Monday in Terre Haute, Indiana.
