The University of Alabama men’s cross country team is peaking at the right time as they claimed the 2005 NCAA South Region Championship this morning in Gainesville, Florida.
Alabama went to Gainesville and defeated three other ranked teams en route to the championship.
“We competed against very good quality teams, four ranked teams in the top 20 going into this meet,” said head coach Harvey Glance. “I’m real proud of the way these guys showed up in a championship environment. We’re moving in a direction that we’ve been working real hard the last three years to get to and it’s finally paying off. I’m real proud of the showing, I’m real proud of these guys.”
Once again, Augustus Maiyo led the Tide as he posted a fourth place finish with a time of 30:01.11 on the 10k course. Abraham Kutingala was the second to cross for Alabama as he finished sixth (30:18.90). Titus Koeh and Alex Korir finished eleventh (30:37.90) and twelfth (30:38.83) respectively while Peter Etoot was the final scorer for the Tide with a 16th place finish in a time of 30:55.58.
“The guys did an outstanding job of coming down here and competing from start to finish,” said head coach Harvey Glance. “Our one to five ran better than they’ve run all season.”
Alabama claimed 40 points, seven fewer than its nearest competitor, the Florida State Seminoles. Maiyo, Kutingala, Koeh, Korir and Etoot were all named All-South Region for their efforts.
The Tide now travels to Terre Haute, Indiana for the 2005 NCAA Championships. The meet is scheduled for Monday, November 21.
