Freshman Shelley Godwin improved her record to 6-1 Saturday and claimed her first flight championship at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic.
Godwin won easily in the finals, 6-1, 6-1, over South Alabama’s Jelena Krivacevic. She cruised earlier in the day in the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Tapiwa Marobela of Florida State.
“It’s been nice to start well because we’ve worked hard,” Godwin said. “It also helps with my confidence being new to know that I can compete on this level. My teammates have been great.”
In all it was another great showing turned in by Crimson Tide players. Godwin, Mari Muller, Andrea Brenes and Natalie McElveen combined to go 6-2 in singles on the day and Alabama split its two doubles matches. All six of the Tide’s singles victories were in straight sets.
Muller lost for the first time this season in the semifinals to Iowa’s Jacqueline Lee, but rebounded in her next match to finish third in her flight. Brenes did the same and her record now sits at 5-2. McElveen came back after Friday’s loss and won twice in the consolation draw.
