The University of Alabama men's cross country team had a goal in mind and they accomplished it, defeating eighth ranked Florida en route to a second place finish at the 2005 SEC Championships.
Alabama had four guys finish in the Top 14 and was led once again by freshman Augustus Maiyo, who claimed second, 2.08 seconds behind front runner Josphat Boit (Arkansas).
"It was an outstanding job by our four guys up front and our result wouldn't have been complete w/o our fifth guy, senior Peter Etoot," said head coach Harvey Glance. "Coach (Joe) Walker did a great job holding these guys together and keeping them focused. The team came in with a very aggressive approach and the guys delivered."
Maiyo led the Tide, as he has all season, with the second place finish (23:01.18) followed by sophomore Alex Korir who finished 11th (23:44.20), freshman Abraham Kutingala who claimed 12th (23:45.69), freshman Titus Koeh who finished 14th (23:49.02) and senior Peter Etoot, who was the final scorer for the Tide, finishing (24:36.17).
For their efforts, Maiyo, Korir, Kutingala and Koeh were all named All-SEC.
"I'm real proud of these guys and the way the program has been handled," said Glance. "We've been trying to pick out points in our program where we'd be successful and we found it in distance. We've met with success so the strategy and plan has worked. I'm real proud of the guys; it was proud moment for Alabama track and field and cross country."
The Arkansas Razorbacks claimed the overall team title with 23 points followed by Alabama's 73 points.
Bama will return to post season action on Saturday, November 12 when the Tide heads to Gainesville, Florida for the NCAA Regional Championships.
