The University of Alabama men’s cross country begins its postseason schedule this weekend as the team travels to Columbia, South Carolina for the SEC Championships.
“We’re always excited when we go to the championship portion of our schedule,” said Coach Joe Walker. “The SEC is always first and foremost on our mind because it’s an opportunity to line up against all the other teams. It’s always a huge meet for us.”
The Tide, currently ranked 20th in the latest poll, will be going up against two of the stronger teams in the country in Arkansas (No. 1) and Florida (No. 8). Walker feels like his team will compete with Florida and whatever happens beyond that is out of his hands.
“You don’t ever want to step into a meet not wanting to win, but you have to be realistic about it,” said Walker. “Arkansas, the top-ranked team in the country, is so deep this year and they’re the favorites to win this thing. Our goal is to run with Florida, the eighth ranked team in the country. They’ve run tremendous all year long, but I think we match up well with them. If each one of our guys runs his race and does what he’s capable of I think we can achieve our goal.”
The men’s 8k race is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. with the awards ceremony scheduled for approximately 10:20 a.m.
