
Tide Golfers Complete Second Round at Mercedes-Benz Championship

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Alabama women’s golf team knocked six shots off of yesterday’s disappointing opening round at the Mercedes-Benz Championship, but were unable to move up in the team standings and remain in 14th place after round two at the event. The Tide posted a 916 in second-round action and stand 11 shots behind 13th-place Northwestern at the tournament, being played at the Cherokee Country Club.
Competing in a 14-team field that includes several top-25 teams and SEC rivals, the Tide continue to be led by junior Jenny Suh. The two-time All-American shot a five-over 76 in the second round. Her 150 after 36 holes puts Suh in a tie for 15th place, as the former Furman star shoots for her 14th career top-10 finish.
Carina Sorensen bounced back in the second round after struggling in her opening round performance. Sorensen shaved 10 strokes from her 85 in the first round and carded a four-over 75 in second-round action. The senior was a key component of the Tide’s victorious effort at the Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate a month ago. She moved up fo16 spots after today’s round and stands in a tie for 57th-place on the individual leaderboard.
Senior Audrey Gale continues to be a consistent performer for the Tide. Gale, who finished 11th as a part of Alabama’s winning performance in the initial tournament of the season, is in a tie for 65th place at this weekend’s Mercedes-Benz Championship.
Also competing for Alabama is sophomore Sarah Sturm and freshman Laura Goodwin. Sturm posted an 84 for the second-straight day to earn XXth place in the standings. Goodwin also posted the same score as yesterday, firing an 83 to put her in 69th-place tie.
Purdue continues to lead the team standings. Georgia holds down second place, while the Swedish Junior National team, Arkansas and host Tennessee make up the remainder of the top five at the event.
Amanda McCurdy of Arkansas and Whitney Wade of Georgia remain deadlocked for first place on the individual leaderboard with 36-hole totals of 144. Five of the top 10 individual performers at the tournament are from the SEC.
The final round of the Mercedes-Benz Championship is slated to begin on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 8:30 a.m.
