Alabama freshman Andrea Brenes makes her collegiate tennis debut this Saturday when the Crimson Tide opens its regular season against Denver. Brenes comes to the Capstone from Costa Rica, where she was the No. 1 ranked juniors player. She also brings an established doubles resume, having won three ITF events and reached the quarterfinals or beyond 20 different times.
The Serve: Had you been to the United States prior coming to the University of Alabama?
The Volley: I lived in Miami, Fla. for two years and trained at the Performance Tennis Acadamy.
S: How is tennis different in Costa Rica than here in America?
V: People in America take tennis much more seriously than in Costa Rica. Players train harder and practice more here. In Costa Rica everyone plays soccer.
S: What has been your biggest tennis accomplishment or favorite moment so far?
V: When I won my first ITF title in Panama last year.
S: If you could do one thing for a day, what would it be?
V: I would either like to learn how to surf or go to a Bob Marley concert.
S: If you could choose to play doubles with one professional tennis player, who would you choose?
V: I’d definitely play with Andre Agassi because I like the way he thinks on the court and I think he is really talented.
S: What do you enjoy doing most away from the tennis courts?
V: I love going to the beach with my friends.
S: Not to make you miss home, but what are you going to miss about Costa Rica the most?
V: I really miss my family and the whole environment in Costa Rica.
S: Which do you prefer, Claycourt or Hardcourt?
V: I like either one. It doesn’t really matter to me.
S: Did you like the movie Wimbledon?
V: I didn’t see it.
S: Are you superstitious at all? If so, what do you do?
V: No, I’m not superstitious. I do pray a lot before I play though. But I don’t consider that a superstition.
