TUSCALOOSA - The University of Alabama women's basketball team hopes to build on its league opening victory when the squad makes the short trip across the state border to play at Mississippi State on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Humphrey Coliseum.
The Crimson Tide improved to 10-4 overall and 1-0 in Southeastern Conference play after rallying from 11 points down in the second half to defeat Kentucky, 69-63, in overtime on Sunday. Against the Wildcats, sophomore Marverly Nettles dropped in three free throws with one-tenth of a second remaining in regulation to force the extra play.
Mississippi State (12-2, 1-0 SEC) is one of the hottest teams in the country heading into Thursday's game as the Lady Bulldogs have won 11 consecutive contests including a 69-62 win over UC Santa Barbara on Monday night in Starkville, Miss. MSU is 9-1 at home this year having won its last eight home contests. Senior All-American Tan White leads the SEC and ranks 4th in the nation in scoring at 21.3 points per game.
Alabama owns a 31-7 all-time record against State, but the Tide has lost its last three meetings with MSU including losses in its last two visits to Starkville. Last year, the Lady Bulldogs earned an 81-78 overtime win over the Tide in "The Hump".
