The Alabama women's cross country team took fifth at the Belmont Opener in Nashville, Tenn.
As was expected, the women leaned on their sophomore class in its opener. Julia Hicks started off her second Tide season by leading her team with a 25th place finish, posting a 15:25.52 over 4-kilometers. She was followed closely by classmates Elizabeth Wancowicz, Tara Enebak and Megan Carnes who finished 27th, 29th and 32nd respectively. Rookie Jen Gray rounded out the scoring for the Tide, taking 39th. The freshmen was listed as day-to-day by head coach Steve Keith, after being hampered by a training injury earlier in the week.
Samford won the women's race with 39 points. Alabama total 151 points on the night.
Alabama brings it home for its next competition, hosting the Crimson Classic Friday, Sept. 17 at the Harry Pritchett Cross Country Course in Tuscaloosa.
