The University of Alabama men’s tennis team opened its fall season in style Friday, winning 7 of its 11 matches in two separate events.
At the Baylor Invitational, sophomore Joseph Jung, ranked 80th by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, won twice in singles to advance to tomorrow’s “round of 16”. In the opening round Jung defeated the tournament’s No. 6 seed, Thomas Schoek in straight sets. Teammates Eric Molnar and Luigi D’Agord both won their opening round matches to advance to the “round of 32” before being eliminated.
In the morning matches, Alabama won all three in impressive fashion. The Tide’s players didn’t lose a single set en route to the victories.
In Athens, Ga., RJ Murray, Billy Mertz and Taylor Stiplin also all won their opening round matches at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships. Murray then fell in the second round. Mertz and Striplin will play their second round matches on Saturday.
Play for Alabama’s men will continue throughout the weekend at both the Baylor Invitational and the Southern Intercollegiate Championships.
