Alabama’s Joseph Jung won twice on Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the main draw at the Baylor Invitational.
After defeating the tournament’s No. 6 seed Friday morning, Jung knocked off two more competitors to improve his record to 3-0 on the year. In the second round, Jung defeated Irving Morales in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2. Jung then came back in the “Sweet 16” to defeat Ryan Stotland 6-1, 6-3. Jung hasn’t dropped a set in the tournament yet. He will play in the semifinals on Sunday. If he wins, the finals will be played later in the day.
In consolation matches, Alabama’s Luigi D’Agord and Eric Molnar each played to victories. After dropping the opening set, D’Agord fought back to defeat Peter Bjork of Colorado, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Molnar also found himself down a set early against Jan Zeleney, and he too fought his way to victory, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Last night, D’Agord and Molnar played doubles and fell to TCU’s top doubles team in a close match, 8-6.
“I’m encouraged by our play so far this weekend,” said Alabama head coach Billy Pate. “We’re a young team and we’ve been able to see what we need to improve on and I’m confident we’ll get better.”
