TUSCALOOSA - The University of Alabama women's golf team carded an opening round 316 at the season-opening UA-Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate being played at the Ol' Colony Golf Complex.
The Tide ended the first day of competition tied for third-place along with fellow SEC member Ole Miss. Tulane posted the low round of the day firing a score of 298 followed by Mississippi State at 309.
Senior Megan George led the Crimson Tide squad on the first day of their home event shooting a two-over-par 74. George, a native of Plymouth, Minn., is tied with three other players just one shot behind opening round leader Beth Irwin of Mississippi State at 73. George was the lone Tide player to shoot in the 70s as blustery winds snatched away Bama's home course advantage.
"We're obviously disappointed with the outcome from today," said UA head coach Betty Palmer. "We had been playing extremely well leading up to this competition, but the first tournament jitters and the very windy conditions seem to take us out of our game a little. We have some solid players on this team so I hope we will make the necessary adjustments and that we'll be able to put up a low number on Tuesday."
In addition to George, others competing for Alabama at the season's debut event included junior Carina Sorensen with an 80 (T-26th), sophomore Amy Middleton and freshman Rebecca Sykes both carded 81 (T-30th), and Emily Sykes posted an 86 (T-60th). Junior Audrey Gale shot an 85 (T-52nd) playing as an individual.
Tulane leads the team competition after a solid opening round that saw four of the Green Wave linksters finishing among the individual Top 10. Tulane counted two 74s and a pair of 75s en route to taking an 11-shot advantage into Tuesday's final round.
Mississippi State, currently in second, holds a seven shot margin on Alabama and Ole Miss. MTSU, coached by former Tide standout Rachel Short, is tied for fifth with UAB at 320 followed by Murray State (321), Birmingham-Southern (321), Jacksonville State (321), Augusta State (325), Troy (329), Memphis (332), Samford (340) and Belmont (347).
In the individual medalist competition, 11 golfers are within three shots of Mississippi State's Irwin with 18 holes of play remaining.
Tournament action at the Ann Rhoads Intercollegiate concludes with a final round of play on Tuesday. Teams are slated to tee off at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Alabama will play with Tulane and Mississippi State and start on the first three holes.
The event is free and open to the public.
