TUSCALOOSA – Lars Brovold, a senior on the University of Alabama’s 2004 men’s golf team, won both his matches Friday in the first day of competition at the Palmer Cup at Ballybunion Golf Club in County Kerry, Ireland. His wins helped his team, Europe, jump to a 9-3 lead going into Saturday’s second and final day.
Europe needs only three points in the final day of the competition to retain the Cup and three-and-a-half points to claim the title for the second-straight year in this annual competition that began in 1997 and pits eight of the best collegiate golfers from the United States against their counterparts from Europe.
Brovold, who is competing for Europe as he is a native of Norway, teamed in the four-ball match with Oklahoma State’s Alex Noren of Sweden to defeat J.J. Jakovac and Ryan Moore 4 and 2. Moore is the 2004 NCAA national individual champion out of UNLV. Jakovac was an All-American this past season at Chico State.
On Friday afternoon Brovold played a singles match and defeated two-time Palmer Cup participant Chris Nallen 2 and 1. Nallen is an All-American and the PAC-10 Player of the Year out of Arizona.
On Saturday Brovold, a first team All-Southeastern Conference selection and an Honorable Mention All-American in 2004, will team again with Noren for Europe. They’ll play against Clemson’s Jack Ferguson and the U.S. Naval Academy’s Billy Hurley of the USA team.
