Polyakov Finishes Fifth in 100m Breaststroke at Olympics

University of Alabama swimmer Vlad Polyakov jumped three places in the finals of the 100m breaststroke at the Athens Olympics to take fifth place. Polyakov, representing his native Kazakhstan, swam to a 1:01.34 finish. He will swim in his best event, the 200m breaststroke on Tuesday.
Zimbabwean Brendan Ashby, a Tide senior in 2004, took sixth in the second heat of the 100m backstroke preliminaries and 39th overall with a 58.91. Yugoslavian Igor Erhartic, a freshman last season, took first in heat number one of the 200m freestyle and 48th overall with a time of 1:54.21. Spiros Bitsakis swam the third leg on Greece's 400m freestyle relay which took seventh in the second heat of preliminaries.
Two-time NCAA Champion Stefan Gherghel, representing his native Romania, will swim the preliminaries of the 200m butterfly on Monday in the final heat of the preliminaries along with U.S. phenom and world record holder Michael Phelps.
