For University of Alabama assistant soccer coach Katie Barnes, it has already been a whirlwind summer as she continues her professional ambitions while traveling around the country to do so.
Barnes most recently played as a guest player with the Atlanta Beat and Washington Freedom of the WUSA in exhibition matches and the Pittsburgh Steel City Sparks of the WPSL.
She helped lead the Beat to a 2-0 win over the Ashville Splash of the W-League, by scoring a goal and assisting on the other.
She also helped the Steel City Sparks to a 2-0 win over the Maryland Pride, scoring both goals.
“I’ve really had a lot of fun playing,” says Barnes. “It certainly validates how much I enjoy it. It also helps from a recruiting standpoint. Anytime a program is affiliated with a player still playing at this level I think it’s appealing to recruits and it can definitely be used as a recruiting tool.”
Barnes will play again this weekend with Pittsburgh before returning to Tuscaloosa for the 2004 Alabama Soccer Camp next week.
She will then travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 17th for the WUSA Festival and will then travel on to Los Angeles for another WUSA Festival the following weekend.
