Alabama sophomores Ashley Bentley and Robin Stephenson saw their great season come to a close Tuesday after losing to UCLA’s Daniela Bercek and Lauren Fisher at the NCAA Women’s Tennis Doubles Championships in Athens, Ga.
Stephenson, who lost earlier in the day at singles, and Bentley took the first set and pushed Bercek and Fisher to a five all tie in the third set but came up just short losing 7-5. Stephenson lost 6-3, 7-5 to second-ranked Alexis Gordon of Florida, the SEC Player of the Year, in the Singles Championships.
Stephenson finishes the year at 23-13 with eight wins over ranked opponents including victories over Gordon and then top-ranked Agata Cioroch of Georgia. She was twice named SEC Player of the Week and took home Second Team All-SEC honors at singles. With her 23 wins, Stephenson became the eight women’s player in school history to reach the “21 Win Club” playing at No. 1 singles.
The doubles team finishes at 23-9, the second most victories in a single season by an Alabama women’s doubles team. They were also named Second Team All-SEC at doubles while winning 14 of their last 18 matches.
