Alabama sophomore Robin Stephenson will begin competition in the NCAA women's tennis Singles Championships on Monday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Stephenson, ranked 28th in the country, will take on Baylor freshman Carolin Walter at 11:30 a.m.
The Kitchener, Ontario native is 22-12 this year and is 16-9 in dual matches with wins over then top-ranked Agata Cioroch of Georgia and No. 2 Alexis Gordon of Florida. Stephenson was 8-3 in conference play, was SEC Player of the Week twice and was named Second Team All-SEC at singles and doubles with Ashley Bentley. Stephenson played every match at the No. 1 position this season and was named the team's co-MVP. She has eight wins against ranked opponents including four against the top 30 and the only player to defeat both Gordon and Cioroch this season.
Walter, 25-10 on the season and 14-9 in dual matches, became the first Baylor underclassman to qualify for the women's NCAA tournament. She has played No. 1 singles all season and is ranked No. 50 by the ITA.
The winner of the Stephenson/Walter match will play the winner of the Sasha Podkolzina/Gordon match on Tuesday. Gordon is the fifth seed in the tournament. The draw for the doubles tournament, in which Stephenson and Bentley are competing, will be announced on Monday afternoon.
