Day 6: May 23
Taking my uniform off today was an extremely slow process but we were pressed for time so I had to do it. I even tried to take a picture of myself this morning in the mirror just in case it was the last time to wear it.
Despite this, I still felt like we would beat UCLA twice today. No matter how dim a situation may seem, hope is never lost. Their bats were hot and their pitching was solid today. We came out swinging but fell short of many hits. We left the field with no runs, but we were aggressive and got our hacks in.
There was a diving play on the line that I wish I could rewind and be a step quicker for, but I leave with no regrets. I have given everything I have and Jackie and Erin can say the same. I was so glad to see Jackie Mac get a hit and Erin pitch a shutout seventh inning. Also I felt like everyone on the team gave it their all today and I have no doubt that on any day we could beat UCLA. I never thought that my last at bat was going to be done through tear filled glasses but I got two good cuts in. I missed the ball on both, but I just simply let loose. It is with every battle in life—always go down swinging.
Having played since tee ball, every good thing must come to an end. Any retired athlete knows the deep sorrow that comes with letting a huge part of your life go. And then, it is even harder knowing that the team you leave behind will continue on with practice, workouts, great plays, road trips and many laughs without you. I hope that when each of our athletes are seniors, they too will realize how special it all was. I am so thankful for the opportunity to have played with such a talented, entertaining and diverse group that I will never forget. Softball I will let go, but I will never let go of the many memories and circumstances that have made me stronger.
I told the team tonight that this year was a year to build character in which we learned to survive and push on in the grimmest situations. Next year is the year of fulfillment in which Alabama Softball will reign above all the others. These girls will be playing at the 2005 WCWS.
My life is a big question mark right now. I will be attending U of A for one more year to get my Master’s in Marketing and then begin job searching. Hopefully I will find my home and comfort in work and even a family someday. I look forward to spending more time with my family, building relationships and increasing my faith. I have been blessed and know without a doubt that God will continue to bless Alabama Softball—the family that I will always feel at home with.
The past four years have been a ride that I just do not want to get off of. But, we three seniors know that there is nothing that lies ahead that we cannot handle.
