MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – University of Alabama women’s golfer Megan George moved one step closer to playing in the 2004 U.S. Women’s Open in July by finishing as the co-medallist at the local qualifying tournament played at the Bunker Hills Golf Course on Thursday.
George, a junior at UA from Plymouth, Minn., carded a round of 73 to share the low round score honors with Mara Larrauri of Argentina. She was the only amateur among the five players that advanced to sectionals. George’s next step is the Sectional Qualifier in Bloomfield, Minn., scheduled for play between June 14-20.
The Bunker Hill qualifier was one of 17 events that make up the first round of the U.S. Open qualifying process.
Former Crimson Tide linkster Vanessa Bell (1997-2000) from Suffolk, England, could also be in a sectional field after finishing as the top alternate local qualifier for the event played at Fox Chapel Golf Course in Pittsburgh, Pa.
This year’s U.S. Women’s Open will be played July 1-4 at Orchard Park Golf Club in South Hadley, Mass.
