TUSCALOOSA – University of Alabama senior golfer Lars Brovold has extended his Crimson Tide career by at least two weeks. Brovold is one of six individuals who have been selected to compete at the NCAA East Regional Men’s Golf Championships. He will travel to New Haven, Conn., where Yale University will host one of three NCAA regionals all held on May 20-22, 2004. The other sites are West Lafayette, Indiana (Purdue hosts) and Sunriver, Oregon (Portland hosts).
The top teams and individuals from each region advance to the NCAA team finals which are June 1-4 in Hot Springs, Va.
“I’m very excited for Lars,” said his Alabama coach Jay Seawell of the first team All-Southeastern Conference golfer who has led Alabama in low stroke average for the past two seasons. “Obviously I’m disappointed and he’s disappointed that he’s not going with his team. But it’s exciting to see them reward someone who works so hard. I think Lars has a good chance to advance from the regional which would be a great stepping stone for his career.”
Brovold is seeded first of the six individuals selected for the East Regional. Brovold is capping a strong amateur golf career with NCAA postseason play. In 2002 he finished 19th of 192 golfers at the World Amateur. He holds the school’s low round record with the 63 he shot in tournament play his junior season. The three-time Academic All-SEC award winner did not even start competing in the sport until he was 15, making quick success of his play. The Fredrikstad, Norway native was on Norway’s World Amateur team in 2000 as well and is the 1997 Norwegian junior golf national champion.
He has a 71.60 stroke average in 12 tournament’s (35 rounds) played this season and has a 72.94 career stroke average in four seasons (45 tournaments and 131 rounds) at Alabama. This season he collected one individual tournament championship at North Carolina but his collegiate career was perhaps highlighted by his 2nd place finish (to Wake Forest’s Bill Haas) this season at the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. Competing in a field full of All-Americans, Brovold finished the tournament at 13 under par (65-65-70/200).
