INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced the fields for the three 2004 Women’s Golf Regionals and the Alabama Crimson Tide was among the list of 21 teams selected to play in the East Regional at the Mission Inn Golf & Tennis Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. on May 6-8.
For the Tide, the selection marks their fifth trip to postseason play in the last eight years and is the third time in the last four seasons. Alabama is the 16th seed at the NCAA East Regional. UA’s last NCAA Regional appearance was at the 2002 East Regional in Baton Rouge, La.
“We are thrilled and excited to be in the NCAA Tournament field,” said 16th-year head coach Betty Palmer, who is taking her seventh squad to an NCAA Regional. “It is a great compliment to how we played this entire season. I think our struggles the past two tournaments may have cost us a few spots in the seeding, but we are proud to be among those teams invited. The team is focused and working hard to do the things necessary to advance to Nationals.”
The NCAA Championship committee seeded the top 15 squads and placed them in Regional play according to their “s-curve” formula. After placing those teams, the next 10 rated squads in each region were added to the field. Automatic qualifiers not already seeded were then put in followed by the remaining at-large selections.
The East Regional field includes top-ranked Duke along with Auburn (#6), Oklahoma State (#7), Wake Forest (#12) and UNLV (#13). Along with Alabama and Auburn, the East also includes SEC squad’s Florida, LSU, Tennessee, South Carolina and Ole Miss. A total of 10 of the 12 women’s golf teams in the SEC made the regional field with Georgia (West), Vanderbilt (Central) and Arkansas (Central) joining the seven East Regional teams.
The top eight finishing teams at each regional site along with the top two individual players not on one of those eight teams advance to the NCAA Championship Tournament on May 18-21 at the Auburn University Golf Club in Auburn, Ala.
