Seven UA Women's Basketballers Named Academic All-SEC

BIRMINGHAM – The Southeastern Conference office announced their 2003-04 Winter Academic Honor Roll list and seven University of Alabama women’s basketball players were among those honored by the league and Commissioner Mike Slive.
The University of Alabama totaled 26 of the league’s 286 honored student-athletes with the women’s basketball program sharing school high honors with gymnastics for the highest number of performers selected.
“We are extremely proud of the performance of our student-athletes in the classroom,” said UA head coach Rick Moody. “We pride ourselves on not only recruiting the top athletes on the court but also the most committed students in the classroom. This year’s group of honorees is a perfect example of that dedication and commitment. This honor is also a reflection of the hard work and commitment provided by our academic support staff, in particular Barbara Davis, and assistant coach C.C. Moorer, who is primarily responsible for keeping up the our team’s academic progress.”
Alabama’s list of Academic All-SEC selections includes senior Oreal Taylor (3.63 – Human Development/Family Studies), juniors Katie Sipe (3.76 – Restaurant & Hospitality Management) and Krystle Johnson (3.00 – Math), sophomore Dee Merriweather (3.21 – General Health Studies) and redshirt freshmen Leah Drury (3.39 – Sports Fitness Management), Lauren Hill (3.41 – Biology) and Kate Mastin (3.48 – Pre Business).
The Crimson Tide has produced 52 all-time Academic All-SEC selections over the years including 45 during Moody’s 15-year tenure at the Capstone.
