Tide senior golfer Lars Brovold has had amazing career at the Capstone. Not only was he a 2002 World Amateur participant (he finished 19th out of 192 of the world’s best), but he holds the University of Alabama’s low round record with a 63. This season, he won his first ever collegiate tournament championship at the University of North Carolina’s Franklin Street Trust Invitational. Two weeks later, he captured second place in the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate, shooting 13 under par for the tournament among a field loaded with All-Americans and all-conference golfers. He has also collected six top ten finishes this season. Though he didn’t start competing in golf until he was 15, it is clear that Lars has mastered the art of competition, and his name will surely echo throughout the golf world for many years to come.
As you look back on your four years here, what are come memories you have?
“I have been improving every year. I am a lot better now and the results show that. I have really enjoyed getting better. The best memory I have is definitely winning my first college golf tournament (University of North Carolina’s Franklin Street Trust Invitational). That was pretty cool.”
What are you plans for the future?
“I am finishing school in July, then heading back to Norway. In the fall, I am going to play in the European Tour Qualifier, hopefully I’ll make it. If I do well over there, I might come back to the States one day and try to make the PGA Tour.”
What did you think of Phil Mickelson winning the Masters yesterday?
“I was glad he did, even though my favorite golfer, Ernie Els, came in second place. I think Phil deserved to win, so I was happy.”
If you weren’t a golfer, what sport would you play?
“I love soccer, so that is what I would play. It is big over in Europe, so I used to play a lot back home. Choosing between it and golf was hard, but I’m glad I chose golf.”
If I were to make a movie of your life, who would play you?
“Colin Farrell - He’s got the accent!”
You hold the University of Alabama’s school low round record with a 63. How does it feel to have your name in the Alabama record books?
“When I was playing that round, I didn’t know anything about the record. I just did my best and played great. It is great to have a record here because a lot of good golfers went to school here.”
What were some high points from this year?
“Well, for me personally, it was winning the tournament in North Carolina. Also, at the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate, I shot minus 13 in three round and came in second to Bill Hass, who is an incredible golfer. For the team, winning our home tournament in March was definitely a high point.”
Do you have any predictions for the future of Alabama golf?
“We got a new coach (Jay Seawell) a couple of years ago, and I like him a lot. He does a great job recruiting, and we got some great guys in this year and will get more in next year. I think things are going to get a lot better. We have kind of been in a slump during the past couple of year, but I see very good things ahead.”
What is something about you that would surprise people?
“I hate to lose and get really mad when I do. I don’t just hate to lose in golf, but everything, no matter what I’m doing. I always want to win.”
