BATON ROUGE, La. – The University of Alabama women’s golf team got solid play from its entire lineup on Friday en route to shooting an opening round 299 and earning the day one lead at the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic.
The Crimson Tide’s 11-over par total put them in front by two shots over host team LSU heading into Saturday’s second round. UA’s sub-300 round was even more impressive considering they played most of the front nine in heavy rain and gusty wind conditions.
“We had a solid team effort today,” said UA head coach Betty Palmer. “We got strong play from everybody in the lineup and I’m very proud of how well we played. It is exciting to get off to such a great start and I look forward to us continuing this level of play throughout the weekend.”
Junior Megan George paced the all-around Alabama attack carding an even-par 72 on the 6,265-yard layout at the LSU University Club. George is in a three-way tie for second in the individual medallist competition, just one shot behind day one leader Amelie Farrah of UNC-Wilmington.
Fellow junior Darby Sligh fired an opening round 74 to place in a tie for sixth with sophomore Carina Sorensen shooting a 75 (T-10th) to also rank among the Top 10 individuals after day one. Senior Mandy Tedder shot a 78 (T-24th) and freshman Amy Middleton (T-48th) posted an 81 to round out the Tide’s travel squad. UA senior Anna Strandberg fired a 79 (T-35th) playing as an individual at the event.
Alabama was the only squad in the 17-team field to record a round under 300 on the first day. LSU sits in second after posting a 301 followed by UNC-Wilmington (304), South Carolina (305), North Carolina (306), Tulane (308), Furman (310), Ole Miss (313), Louisville (315), Mississippi State (317), Birmingham Southern (319), North Carolina State (328), Kentucky (330), Augusta State (330), UAB (330), Memphis (332) and Winthrop (340).
