NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Southeastern Conference announced its list of women’s basketball postseason award winners and University of Alabama junior Monique Bivins and freshman Kate Mastin were among those chosen as league honorees.
Bivins, a 5-9 guard from Alabaster, Ala., was named an All-SEC second team selection while Mastin, a 5-9 guard from Boaz, Ala., garnered All-Freshman accolades. It is the first time since 2002 that Alabama has placed a player on the All-SEC team.
“I’m extremely proud and excited for both these young ladies,” said UA head coach Rick Moody. “They have been key performers for our team all season and it is nice that the coaches in this league recognized their hard work and dedication. Both players are very deserving of their awards.”
Bivins is the team’s leading scorer at 14.7 points a game and is second in rebounding at 4.7 boards a game. She ranks among the Top 10 in the SEC in scoring and three-pointers and has posted 24 double-figure point totals in 27 games this season. Bivins has scored over 20 points six times this year including a career high 30 at Mississippi State this past Sunday. She is just the 13th second-team All-SEC honoree in Bama history.

A redshirt last season, Mastin ranks second on the team in assists and is the team’s third leading scorer in SEC play. She has scored double digit points in eight games including a career best 14 against Mississippi State in January. Mastin scored the game winning basket against South Carolina in the SEC opener and then tallied the final four points in victory over Ole Miss. She also scored the final seven points to ice the Tide’s win against Arkansas.
Mastin becomes only the fourth UA player to earn SEC All-Freshman honors joining former Tide greats Niesa Johnson (1992), Yolanda Watkins (1993) and Dominque Canty (1996) on the list.
The crimson duo and the rest of their Alabama teammates are set to open play at the 2004 Southeastern Conference Championship Tournament on Thursday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. against the Ole Miss Lady Rebels on Fox Sports Net. The SEC Tournament is being held at the Gaylord Entertainment Center in Nashville and runs from Thursday through Sunday.
