ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Alabama women’s golf team carded an opening round 318 on Friday at the 32nd annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic hosted by the University of Georgia.
The Crimson Tide sit in 17th place at the event following the opening 18 holes of play at the par 72, 6,014-yard UGA Golf Course. Junior Megan George shot a round of 75 (T-27th) to finish the day as the squad’s top performer.
“We just didn’t have a very good round on Friday,” said UA head coach Betty Palmer. “We have a lot of work to do over the next two days, but I think this group is definitely capable of getting things turned around. If we get things back on track tomorrow, we have a chance to move up the standings at this highly competitive event.”
UA junior Darby Sligh, who continues to battle a sore back, shot an opening 79 (T-62nd) as did Tide freshman Amy Middleton. Carina Sorensen posted an 85 (92nd) and Mandy Tedder carded a 90 (T-96th) to round out the Alabama line-up’s scoring on Friday.
Ohio State holds a one-stroke lead over Georgia and Duke after shooting a first round 291. Auburn is in fourth at 293 followed by Michigan State, Oklahoma State, East Carolina, Wake Forest, Tennessee, Florida State, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Furman, South Carolina, Kent State, Alabama and Kentucky.
Duke’s Brittany Lang sits atop the individual medallist list following her blistering six-under-par 66.
Competition at the Liz Murphey Classic runs through the weekend with 18 holes of play slated for both Saturday and Sunday on the University of Georgia campus.
