Jenny Mainz’s Alabama women’s tennis squad continued its ascent up the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, climbing six spots to No. 22 in the latest rankings release on Tuesday. After a slow start to their 2004 campaign, Alabama has moved up 31 spots in the past month, winning five of its last six matches.
The Crimson Tide’s sophomore co-captains, Robin Stephenson and Ashley Bentley also made a splash in the individual rankings on Tuesday. Stephenson moved from No. 50 in singles to No. 37 after her win over then-second ranked Alexis Gordon.
Ashley Bentley made her entrance into the rankings this week as well, coming in at No. 57 in singles. In doubles rankings, Bentley and Stephenson came in at No. 35, their first doubles ranking of the season.
Bentley has been red-hot for the Crimson Tide and is undefeated in SEC play. In addition to her six doubles wins with Stephenson, Bentley has notched 12 consecutive singles wins, include a 6-0 mark in league play. She took down then No. 26 player in the nation Jennifer Magley on Sunday.
Stephenson is the current SEC Player of the Week and maintains an unblemished conference record.
No. 22 Alabama (9-5, 4-2 SEC) goes on the road this weekend, facing No. 5 Vanderbilt (15-2, 5-1 SEC) and No. 18 Kentucky (13-7, 4-2 SEC).
