The University of Alabama women’s tennis team heads south to Coral Gables, Fla. to face the No. 22 (ITA) Miami Hurricanes on Sunday at 11 a.m.
After a season-opening victory over Louisville, the No. 30 Crimson Tide (1-1) have had a week off since losing to 12th-ranked Harvard last Saturday, 6-1 in Boston, Mass.
“This is another great opportunity for our young team,” said head coach Jenny Mainz. “Miami is ranked No. 22 and has the No. 11 ranked player leading their team. This weekend will be a test and an opportunity to see how we respond being thrown into the fire for two consecutive weekends.”
Miami defeated No. 68 Florida Atlantic 7-0 on Friday to push their record to 2-0. Junior Megan Bradley, a transfer from UCLA, is ranked No. 11 in singles. The Hurricanes also boast the No. 97 and No. 99 players in the country in sophomore Melissa Applebaum and junior Staci Stevens, respectively, and the No. 43 ranked doubles team of Applebaum and senior Siehem Bennacer.
Miami leads the series against Bama 3-2, with the Hurricanes winning the last meeting 7-2 in 1999.
“We are taking care of the little things,” Mainz said. “We’re focusing on constant improvement. Our competitive schedule is preparing us well for the Southeastern Conference season that is just around the corner.”
