NEW ORLEANS – Battling a steady rain fall all day long, the University of Alabama women’s golf team fired a final round 327 on Tuesday to earn a fifth place finish at the Nokia Sugar Bowl/Tulane Invitational.
The Crimson Tide carded a three-round total of 953 (322-304-327) en route to earning their third Top 5 team finish this year and the first of the spring season. The event was held at the par 72, 6,075-yard English Turn Golf & Country Club.
Junior Megan George (79-74-84/237) and sophomore Carina Sorensen (80-78-79/237) shared the honor as team’s low scorer at the event. The UA pair finished in a tie for 16th-place in the individual competition.
“I’m a little disappointed in how we finished after posting such a strong second round yesterday,” said UA head coach Betty Palmer. “However, with the rain coming down all day it was going to be a struggle for anyone to shoot a really low number. I’m proud of the effort and it’s a pretty strong showing despite not having our best golfer in the lineup. We really missed Darby Sligh this week, and hopefully she’ll get healthy real soon and be back on the course for us.”
Sligh, a junior for the Tide and owner of the squad’s lowest stroke average, missed the event due to some back problems.
Freshman Amy Middleton was the Tide’s top performer on Tuesday shooting a final round 78. Middleton finished tied for 22nd at 241 (79-84-78). Others competing for Alabama at the event included Mandy Tedder T-28th (84-75-86/245) and Josie Lowder in 40th (88-77-89/254).
Tulane, the host team, captured the team title with a three-day score of 895 followed by LSU at 929. Ole Miss finished in third at 936 followed by Campbell (946), Alabama, TCU (966), Mississippi State (969), East Carolina (974) and New Orleans (1010).
The Crimson Tide’s next tournament action comes on Feb. 22-24 when they travel to Tucson, Ariz., to participate in the NCSU Saguaro Cactus Classic.
