The Alabama women's track and field team is getting a head start on the 2005 indoor season by participating in the aptly named Clemson Opener on Friday.
Usually the Crimson Tide gets its season underway in mid-January, but this year Sandy Fowler, in her eight season as the Tide's head coach, wanted to get the ball rolling earlier.
"It lets us know where they are at before we go to the Christmas break," Fowler said. "This will give us a month until our next competition and we'll have a much better idea of what we need to work on during that period of time."
A dozen Alabama athletes will make the trip, including All-American Beth Mallory. Mallory, along with senior Chafree Bain will compete in the weight throw. Rookie Lorna Finn will make her Tide debut in the weight and shot put.
Senior Tasha Pharr will compete in the long jump and 60m hurdles. Pharr will be joined in the hurdles by sophomore Rachel Wilson and freshman LeAuna Sistrunk. Wilson will also run 200m and Sistrunk will compete at 400m. Junior Kou Luogon will triple jump as well as run 400m.
Juniors Tahesia Harrigan and Majik Reed along with senior Christy Fairley will compete in the 60m dash. Harrigan and Reed will also go in the 200m run while Fairley will run 400m.
The meet is a one-day affair, starting at 1 p.m. EST and ending after 9 p.m. EST.
