Alabama’s Luigi D’Agord lost his effort for a second consecutive tournament title Sunday at the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships.
D’Agord fell in the finals to Luben Pampoulov of UCLA, 7-5, 6-2. Pampoulov was the tournament’s No. 1 seed and is ranked No. 24 by the ITA.
“It was a high level match,” said Alabama head coach Billy Pate. “Pampoulov is the most experienced player that Luigi has faced this season. He has a lot of maturity and really brought his “A” game today.”
Each player held serve in the first set until Pampoulov finally broke serve at five and won the opening set 7-5.
Despite the loss for D’Agord, the finishes the fall season at 17-4. All four of his losses came to ranked opponents. D’Agord even managed to avenge one of those losses to Miami’s Josh Cohen.
Alabama will now take the next two months off before starting its spring season on January 13 at the SEC Indoor Championships in New Orleans, La.
