TUSCALOOSA - Sophomore Navonda Moore scored 18 points and freshman Lateefah Joye added 10 rebounds as the Alabama Crimson Tide women's basketball team defeated EA Sports, 93-75, Tuesday night at Coleman Coliseum in their first and only exhibition game of the season.
Senior forward Natasha Gamble chipped in 14 points on seven of 12 shooting, while junior center Dee Merriweather contributed 14 points of her own, hitting seven of eight shots from the field.
"I told our team tonight after the game that our best player was all 11 of our players," said UA head coach Rick Moody. "I did feel that Dee Merriweather played as good as I've seen her play and that was nice to see. I was really happy with the quality of depth we showed tonight and I also thought we demonstrated a level of athleticism we haven't had here in a few years."
Alabama shot better than 46 percent from the field, including 26.3 percent from behind the arc. The Tide connected on five of their 11 three-point attempts in the second half after misfiring on all eight attempts in the opening stanza.
EA Sports was led by point-guard Maria Conlon, who scored 19 points on 70 percent shooting from the field, including two of four from behind the arc. Former University of Arkansas guard India Lewis turned in 12 points, hitting 75 percent from three-point territory.
A traveling squad of former collegiate players, EA Sports is coming off a 91-77 victory at Mississippi State and an 84-56 loss to cross-state rival Auburn. On Nov. 5, the team lost a hard fought contest at defending champion Connecticut, 75-69.
"Tonight was a fun game for the players and for our fans," Moody added. "But, now we have to get back to work on the practice floor because we play for real in about 10 days and still have a long way to go."
Alabama opens up the 2004 regular season on Friday, Nov. 19, in a noon match-up with the Michigan Wolverines.
