The University of Alabama’s Robin Stephenson will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich. to play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Championships beginning Thursday, November 7.
Stephenson received one of eight At-large bids to the Championships after advancing to the semifinals of the ITA Southern Regional Championships two weeks ago. She will face Washington’s Dea Sumantri in the first round Thursday.
“I’m thrilled for Robin. She deserves to play in this event. It will be a great challenge and opportunity for her to play against the best competition in the nation,” Alabama head coach Jenny Mainz said.
Stephenson is ranked No. 16 by the ITA and is 8-4 this fall. She has twice come within one victory of clinching an automatic berth into the ITA National Indoors. At the Riviera All-Americans she lost to Florida’s Jennifer Magley in the finals of the main consolation draw. She then fell to Georgia’s Shadisha Robinson in the semifinals of the Wilson/ITA Southern Regionals.
This week’s ITA National Indoors is the second national championship event in collegiate tennis each year. Only the top 16 teams and top 32 individuals each fall are invited to participate.
