The University of Alabama men’s tennis team will send three players this week to one of the nation’s most prestigious tournaments, the 48th Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championships.
Luigi D’Agord, Billy Mertz and Jordie Kindervater will travel to Los Angles, Ca. to participate in the event which begins on November 3 and runs through November 7.
D’Agord will enter the tournament with a five-match winning streak and fresh off winning the Crimson Tide Fall Championships this past weekend. D’Agord pushed his fall record to 13-3 with his performance at home over the weekend and claimed his first collegiate championship. His first match will be Thursday at 11:00 a.m. PST. in the tournament’s main draw. Mertz will also play in the main draw Thursday. His opening round match will be at 10:00 a.m. PST. D’Agord and Mertz will each play an opponent to be determined by matches in the qualifying round.
Kindervater will attempt to play his way into the main draw on Wednesday as he opens up in the qualifying round at 11:15 a.m. PST. against Eric Rubens of UC San Diego. Kindervater must win twice to qualify for the main draw.
D’Agord and Mertz will team up for doubles and will begin play in the main draw Friday afternoon.
The Southern California Intercollegiate Championships has long been one of the nation’s most coveted tournaments. Past winners include Arthur Ashe, Jr. and Luke Jensen. Ignacio Hirigoyen of SMU is the athlete representing a school outside the state of California to win the event. He did so in 1983.
