KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Alabama women's golf team fired an opening round 314 at the 2004 Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championship on Friday.
Alabama is in 14th-place following first round action at the Mercedes Championship. Hosted by the University of Tennessee, the event is being played at the par 71, 5,932-yard Cherokee Country Club.
Junior transfer Audrey Gale carded the low round of the day for the Tide shooting a one-over-par 72. Gale, who is making her first appearance on the Bama travel squad, is currently tied for ninth.
Other golfers competing for Alabama at the tournament include Megan George (79, T-58th), Carina Sorensen (79, T-58th), Emily Sykes (84, T-86th) and Rebecca Sykes (89, 96th).
"We started off well but had a little trouble at the close of the round," said UA head coach Betty Palmer. "Audrey had a very solid day on the course. The turtle back greens caused us a lot of problems today. We have two more days of play and hopefully we will learn and adjust and play much better on Saturday and Sunday."
Arkansas leads the team competition after posting a first round score of 289. Ohio State is second at 293 followed by Kent State (296), Tulsa (297) and Tulane (298) rounding out the top five squads. Tennessee's Holly Cantwell and Kent State's Gabby Wedding share the individual medalist lead following their opening round two-under-par 69.
Competition at the Mercedes-Benz Championship continues through the weekend with 18 holes of play scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
