The Alabama women's cross country team, hindered by injuries, ran just five athletes at the 2004 Southeastern Conference Championships held in Fayetteville, Ark. Saturday (Oct. 30) morning, finishing in 10th place.
Tennessee won its second consecutive title, just two points better than host Arkansas. The Lady Vols posted the meet low at 55 points. Alabama scored 257 points to finish eighth points ahead of South Carolina.
The sophomore trio of Elizabeth Wancowicz, Julia Hicks and Megan Carnes led the Crimson Tide, finishing 42nd, 43rd and 48th respectively. Wancowicz turned in a career best 22:40.78 over the 6-kilometer course. Hicks posted a 22:43.80 while Carnes was just behind with a career best of her own at 22:48.99.
Senior Virnetta Greene was 64th with a 23:19.21 while junior Blair Davis was 70th, crossing the line at 23:28.09.
The Tide was without the services of Tara Enebak who has been slowed by a hamstring injury. Enebak was the Tide's top runner early this season and most of last season.
Next up for the Tide is the NCAA South Region Championships in Tuscaloosa. It will be Alabama's first hosting duty of the season after Hurricane Ivan canceled the 2004 Crimson Classic. The regional will be held on the Harry Pritchett Cross Country Course Saturday, Nov. 13.
