The Alabama women’s cross country team cranks up the 2004 postseason Saturday, Oct. 30 with the Southeastern Conference Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
This season marks the second time Arkansas has hosted the SEC Championships, with the other being in 1994. The meet will be run on the Agri Park Course with the Women’s race starting at 9 a.m. and the men’s 8k race staring at 10 a.m.
The Crimson Tide, which finished ninth last season, will compete over a 6-kilometer course led by the sophomore trio of Elizabeth Wancowicz, Megan Carnes and Julia Hicks. Alabama will be without early season front runner Tara Enebak, who has been hampered by a hamstring injury.
“With Tara in the lineup, we were looking at moving up in the standings from last season,” cross country coach Steve Keith said. “Without her, we are realistically looking at holding onto our spot from last year.”
Enebak was the Tide’s top finisher at last year’s SEC Championships, finishing 25th as a freshman. Alabama finished ahead of South Carolina and LSU last month at the Auburn Invitational.
Tennessee is the defending SEC Champion with championship host Arkansas winning 10 of the last 13 titles. Alabama won back-to-back titles in 1986 and 1987 and has finished runner-up six times.
