A week removed from its first meet victory of the season, the University of Alabama men’s cross country team has a full head of steam heading into the 2004 SEC Cross Country Championships.
The Crimson Tide posted a fourth place finish at the Auburn Invitational on October 11 followed by its first meet championship of the season at the Mississippi State Short Course Invitational on October 25.
Bama will look to Alex Korir who has been the Tide’s work horse all season. He was recently named the SEC Athlete of the Week following his performance at the Mississippi State meet where he posted the fastest time in the 5k in the SEC this season.
Looking for a strong showing will be standout Peter Etoot. Etoot missed the first part of the season while trying to determine whether he would red shirt or not, but has shown significant improvement over his last two races since joining the team.
“Team wise, Arkansas is the clear favorite followed by Florida and then you’d have a large group of teams that are very similar including ourselves,” said Alabama coach Joe Walker. “So it’s really going to come down to who does what on the day. We’re looking for a solid performance that would put us in the fifth or sixth spot which would be great. All the teams are pretty even this year, we’ve got two or three guys with a chance to be All-SEC, and we expect good races from that group.”
The race is scheduled to get underway on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. CT.
