Stephenson Advances at Wilson/ITA South Regional Championships

Alabama’s Robin Stephenson advanced to the quarterfinals of the Wilson/ITA South Regional Championships on Saturday. Stephenson defeated Florida’s Lolita Frangulyan in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Stephenson is the tournament’s No. 2 seed and lone Tide player remaining in the main draw at the Championships. The two finalists will receive bids to the ITA National Indoor Championships in November.
Melissa Minor and Sonja Nikolic both bounced back after opening round losses on Friday. Nikolic won twice in the consolation draw and has qualified for the semifinals with wins over April Bradley of Belmont and Robin Gorman of Jacksonville State.
Minor advanced in the consolation draw by defeating Carlin Cochran of Ole Miss, 6-1, 6-2 before losing her second match of the day to Georgia Tech’s Lyndsay Shosho.
In doubles, Melissa Day and Mari Muller were the Tide’s furthest advancing team. They played their way into the quarter finals by defeating Chloe Carlotti and Virginia Tomatis of Ole Miss in the second round. Day and Muller however fell in the quarterfinals to Shadisha Robinson and Natalie Frazier of Georgia.
Quarterfinal and semifinal matches will be completed on Sunday. Weather permitting; play will begin at 9 a.m.
