ROGERS, Ark. - The University of Alabama women's golf team carded a 310 while batting windy conditions in the opening round of the Lady Razorback Invitational on Sunday at the par 72, 6,015-yard Pinnacle Country Club.
The Tide finished the first day in sixth place of the 19-team field just 13 shots behind the leader Iowa State at 297. UA was just one stroke from the top five as Missouri carded a 309 to grab the fifth spot.
Freshman Emily Sykes led the way for Alabama on Sunday posting a round of 75 to sit in a tie for 10th of the individual rankings. Junior Audrey Gale carded a 77 (T18) followed by junior Carina Sorensen 78 (T26), senior Megan George 81 (T51) and sophomore Amy Middleton 82 (T62).
"We played pretty well to day except for a pair of par fives that cost us several shots," said UA head coach Betty Palmer. "Hopefully we have learned our lesson and will make the adjustments in tomorrow's round. I look for us to play better the next two days and put ourselves in position to challenge at this event."
Iowa State grabbed a six-shot advantage after the opening 18 holes with host Arkansas in second at 303. Illinois State (305), Michigan (306) and Missouri rounded out the top five squads. The Cyclones Lisa Meschi led the individual medallist competition by three shots following her round of two-under-par 7o on Sunday.
Competition at the Lady Razorback continues on Monday with second round action slated to begin at 8:30 a.m. The event concludes with a final round of action on Tuesday.
