Women's Cross Country Takes Fourth at Auburn Invitational

The Alabama women's cross country team finished fourth at the 2004 Auburn Invitational run on the Indian Pines Golf Course Monday morning.
I told the team coming into the race that fourth through ninth would be separated by about 50 points and that's how it ended up," Alabama coach Steve Keith said. "Given our team right now, I think fourth place was a good finish for us. I thought Megan (Carnes) and Elizabeth (Wancowicz) both raced well again today. I was pleased with how Virnetta (Greene) ran in her first race of the season."
The Crimson Tide scored 172 points, finishing behind Samford, Auburn and Mississippi State. Sophomore Elizabeth Wancowicz led Alabama with a 23rd place, 19:18.61 finish. Sophomores Megan Carnes and Julia Hicks came in 25th and 31st respectively. Carnes ran a 19:24.67 and Hicks crossed the line at 19:39.09.
Senior Virnetta Greene, in her first race this season, and freshman Jen Gray rounded out the top-5, coming in 43rd and 56th. Greene ran a 19:59.46 and Gray went 20:09.31.
"We're getting healthier, we're getting fitter and we're getting use to racing again," Keith said. "So things are definitely on the upswing."
Alabama returns to action Oct. 11 at the MSU Short Course Invite in Starkville, Miss.
