Crimson Tide Men's Tennis Wins 'Alabama Kickoff!'

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - It was a long but successful day for the University of Alabama men’s tennis team as the Crimson Tide defeated Samford and Jacksonville State at the ‘Alabama Kickoff!’ on Sunday. Jacksonville State beat Samford 5-2 in the event as well.
The Crimson Tide faced the Bulldogs in the 9 a.m. match, winning 5-2, and capped the evening downing Jacksonville State 7-0. Alabama head coach Billy Pate got a chance to test the depth of his young team because three of the Tide’s top players sat out the match due to NCAA limitations on the number of events in which a player can participate.
“We were able to get some of our new guys much need experience and able to learn more about want need to work on and what our strengths are,” Pate said. “We certainly got a chance to play a lot of tennis. “I think we gained as a team and should be prepared as we head into the regular season in two weeks.
After missing the bulk of fall play with an injury, Tide senior Christian Brodersen returned to winning form, scoring two singles and two doubles wins on the day. Junior RJ Murray along with freshmen Eric Molnar and Mike Green also had perfect 4-0 days.
Matt Drummond sealed the Tide’s shutout win as he capped the night match with a 9-7 win over Jacksonville State’s Toby Bourke, Drummond’s first match-victory since shoulder surgery last year.
Alabama returns to action next in two weeks with a double-header at the Hank Crisp Indoor facility, hosting Troy State at 9 a.m. and Furman at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 7.
