TUSCALOOSA, ALA - Alabama's phenomenal freshman class paced their team to a third place finish at the 2003 Crimson Classic Invitational here at the Harry Pritchett Golf Course Friday afternoon.
Bolstered by two top-10 individual finishes, the Crimson Tide scored 97 points to post its second top-5 finish in as many outings. Tennessee won the women's race with 37 points while Mississippi State was second with 63 points. UAB and Samford rounded out the top-5 with 114 points and 136 points respectively.
Rookie Julia Hicks again led the Tide, posting a time of 18 minutes and 30.24 seconds, good for sixth place. Hicks' classmate, Tara Enebak made a strong push throughout the race, taking eighth with an 18:30.95.
"We had four really good races out there today," Alabama head coach Steve Keith said. "I was particularly impressed by with Tara. She was out there pushing for every place, being very aggressive."
In addition to Hicks and Enebak, the Tide placed two other freshmen in the top-25. Elizabeth Wancowicz took 19th with a 19:15.44 while Meg Carnes went 19:26.26, good for 24th place.
"Elizabeth and Meg really worked well together and that was the key to their success today," Keith said. "Overall we had a good solid race and we finished where I thought we could if we had this kind of effort. Over the next couple of races, as we add some other folks into our lineup, we have a chance to pretty good."
Alabama is off from competition next weekend, returning to action October 3 at the Appalachian State Invitational in Boone, NC.
