Alabama freshman Beth Mallory earned All-American honors at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after taking sixth place in the discus with a throw of 171 feet and seven inches.
Mallory's throw in the finals was more than two-feet better than her preliminary effort. The Ashland, Ohio native is the fourth Alabama athlete to earn All-American honors in the discus and the second Tide thrower to do so under head coach Sandy Fowler's auspices. Safiya Ingram was the last Alabama athlete to earn All-American in the discus, doing so in 2000. Pia Iacova ('82, '83, '84) and Kelly Landry ('85) are the other two Tide athletes to earn the honor.
Mallory's career best mark of 177-05, which came at the SEC 5 Way meet earlier this season, stands third all-time for the Crimson Tide behind Iacova (192-01 in 1983) and Ingram (183-09).
The Tide has one more competitor still in action at these championships, held on the Sacramento State campus. Senior Judyth Kitson qualified ninth for the finals of the 100m dash. The Tide's third competitor at this meet, sophomore Tasha Pharr, advanced to semi-finals of the 100m hurdles before taking 14th in the semis with a 13.54, just shy of finaling.
