The NCAA announced the field of 64 for the 2003 NCAA Softball Championships and the Crimson Tide was announced as the top seed and host of the NCAA Region VIII Championship beginning on Thursday, May 15.
Joining Alabama in the tournament will be Stanford University, the University of Massachusetts, University of Illinois, Georgia Tech, Southern Illinois University, the University of Chattanooga and Southern University.
The Crimson Tide received Southeastern Conference's automatic bid on Sunday when the team won the SEC Tournament Championship. UMass, Chattanooga and Southern also received automatic bids by virtue of winning their conference tournaments.
Stanford, Illinois, Georgia Tech and Southern Illinois all received at-large bids into the tournament.
Alabama is making its fifth consecutive appearance in the tournament and is hosting for the second time in three years. The Crimson Tide also hosted an NCAA Regional tournament in 2001.
Alabama won the NCAA Region IV Championship in Tempe, Arizona in 2000, earning its first trip to the Women's College World Series.
Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the University of Alabama Athletic Ticket Office located in Coleman Coliseum, or fans can call 205.348.BAMA.
Action will begin Thursday at 9:30 a.m. between Illinois and Georgia Tech followed by Alabama and Southern University at 12 p.m. UMass and Southern Illinois will square off at 2:30 p.m. followed by Stanford and Chattanooga at 5 p.m. An elimination will game will close out the first day of action at 7:30 p.m.
