University of Alabama men’s tennis head coach Billy Pate announced the signing of Port St. Lucie, Florida native Michael Green to a national letter of intent to play for the Crimson Tide in the 03-04 season.
Green, 17, has been ranked as high as No. 4 in Florida and No. 18 nationally in his age group. He was the winner of the 1999 Texas Open National tournament and the 2001 Florida Sectional Doubles Championships
"We are extremely excited that Michael has chosen the University of Alabama,” Pate said. “I believe Michael is a hidden treasure and will make a significant impact in our line-up next year. He possesses great athletic talent and is exactly what we were looking for. He has size, quickness and strength that will add an immediate physical presence to our line-up."
Green was a member of Team Florida 2002 in the annual Mills-Redgrave Tournament. The event featured the top three players in each age division in Florida versus the top three players in each age division for the USTA Southern Section. Green helped Florida win the event for the first time in seven years.
The current Tide squad, who moved to 16th in today’s release of the Omni Hotels Collegiate Tennis Rankings, is awaiting the announcement of its opponent for the NCAA Championship Regional held May 9-11.
The first two rounds of the 64-team tournament are hosted at a participant’s home site, and the “Sweet 16” played in Athens, Ga. this season. The NCAA selection show will air on ESPNews Wednesday, April 30, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
