LEXINGTON, Ky. - The University of Alabama women's golf team shot a first round 318 at the Southeastern Conference Golf Championship on Friday. The event is being played on a par 72, 6,153-yard layout at the University Club of Kentucky.
The Crimson Tide is in 10th-place following opening round action at the three-day event. Sophomore Darby Sligh and freshman Carina Sorensen paced the Bama lineup on Friday with rounds of 78. The duo is currently tied for 31st-place in the individual standings.
"We didn't finish the round as well as we would have liked to," said UA head coach Betty Palmer. "We had a pretty good round going but the final few holes were costly. Hopefully we can regroup and just keep things going for a full round tomorrow. If we are able to do that then we can make a move up the leaderboard."
Alabama played the final six holes of the course a collective 24 over-par as a team in Friday's competition. The Tide was just a combined 14-over par on the first 12 holes of play.
The other scoring rounds for Alabama on day one came from Jenny Bouvin (81), Mandy Tedder (81). Anna Strandberg also carded an opening round score of 81.
Tennessee leads the team competition following an opening round of 291, four shots in front of second-place South Carolina (295). Florida is in third at 296 followed by Arkansas (297), Auburn and Georgia (299), Vanderbilt (306), Kentucky (309), Mississippi State (317), Alabama, Ole Miss (319) and LSU (324). Carolina's Kristy McPherson, the two-time defending individual champion, holds a two-stroke advantage in the medallist competition after shooting a four-under-par 68 on Friday.
Tournament play at the SEC Championship continues through the weekend with 18 holes of play scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday. The Crimson Tide returns to the links at 9:00 am (ET) and will be paired with Ole Miss and LSU.
